New Book | Mahatma Gandhi in Cinema

Mahatma Gandhi in Cinema During his lifetime, the only Hindi film Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi watched was Ram Rajya, a film based on his favourite epic Ramayana. Gandhi, then 74, saw the film in a special screening at Juhu in Mumbai on June 2, 1944, during his illness. Like many of his contemporaries in the Indian freedom movement, Gandhi did not think very highly of cinema. He believed Hindi as well as foreign films promoted immorality and corrupted young minds. However, a number of films in several languages have been made on Gandhi. Several films have characters modelled on Gandhi. In a painstakingly researched book by Dr. Narendra Kaushik 'Mahatma Gandhi in Cinema' recently published by Cambridge Scholars in London analyses the 100 years of Hindi cinema (1913-2013) to find out whether and where the father of the Indian nation continues to live on celluloid. Congratulation Dr. Kaushik. Wish I could have written this book.
