Shakti explores different forms and layers of power.
Shakti, A Novel
Original Odia: Mrinal ChatterjeeEnglish Translation: Nadeem KhanPublisher: Timepass, Bhubaneswar
Written in
a science fiction format Shakti (which means power in Sanskrit and almost all
languges which originated from it) explores different forms of power. It
attempts to map what makes a human being or a State powerful, and how it could
be utilised for the benefit of people at large.
Shakti has
different layers.
Releasing in May 2018 |
At one
level it is a tale of good versus evil. A scientist invents a device which can
convert sound (only human voice) energy into electrical energy. He wants to
take the device to the masses for the benefit of all. However the King, whom he
approaches to mass produce it wants it for his own. The scientist does not
agree. The King imprisons him, tortures him; but the scientist does not yield.
The scientist has a lady assistant, who has a soft feeling for him. She along
with the people revolt against the evil King and tries to rescue the scientist.
The novel ends with the scientist standing in between life and death.
There are
several sub plots woven in the main narrative. There is one subplot
highlighting the insensitive bureaucracy, another highlighting palace intrigue,
the third the insensitivity and opportunism of intelligentsia. There is another
subplot highlighting the oppression of the King and the divine justice.
At another
level it is an exploration of the concept of political power. The device which
can produce energy only with the help of human voice is a symbol. The King
tries to supress it by silencing the people. It works up to a point. But
ultimately it fails. People rise in revolt and topple the King. What happens
then? Who exercise the power then? Who then wield real power?
Read this novel to explore the labyrinth of power.
