Audio Book on M F Hussain
If alive Maqbool Fida Husain, the gifted artist would have been 100 this September. He was an icon and iconoclast. A legend and a maverick. He was the most well known Indian painter abroad. However, his paintings depicting Hindu Gods and goddesses in nude enraged a large section of people. Hundreds of law suits were filed against him. His exhibitions were vandalised. Hussain left the country and lived in self-imposed exile in Doha and London from 2006 until his death on 9 June 2011.
Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s. His early association with the Progressive Artist's Group, or "PAG of Bombay" used modern technique, and was inspired by the "new" India after The Partition of 1947. His narrative paintings, executed in a modified Cubist style, can be caustic and funny as well as serious and sombre. His themes—sometimes treated in series—include topics as diverse as Mohandas K. Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the British raj, and motifs of Indian urban and rural life. Early in his painting career, and until his death, he enjoyed depicting the lively and free spirit of horses in many of his works. Often referred to as the "Picasso of India," M.F. Husain is the most celebrated and internationally recognized Indian artist of the 20th century. Husain is primarily known for his paintings, but is also known for his drawings and his work as a printmaker, photographer, and filmmaker. Some of his later works stirred controversy, as they depicted traditional Deities of India in non traditional ways.
He also directed a few movies. In 1967, he received the National Film Award for Best Experimental Film for Through The Eyes of a Painter In 2004, he directed Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities, which was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
Syed Mohd Irfan, who was closely associated with him in creating an audio book on Hussain's life and times has posted the audio book on net.

Cartoons on Sheena Bora murder case coverage
Often public reactions are best judged by cartoons.
Take for instance the general public reaction to the over-saturation coverage of Sheena Bora murder case. It almost pushed out the murder of Prof. M. M. Kalburgi (77) — veteran Kannada writer and former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi — who was known for his strong stand against superstitious practices and right-wing groups, from the mainstream mediascape.

Teachers Day Musings
I was invited to a school on the occasion of Teachers Day (5 Sept.) to speak to the teachers. I have been a teacher for over one and a half decades now. This process of teaching and learning fascinate me. It is a process that is ever evolving and is impacted by so many factors. The teachers need to constantly adjust to these changes and teach.
What have been the changes in recent years? And how the teachers ought to adjust or negotiate with the changes? Here are some thoughts:
1. With the democratisation of information, thanks to Internet and Web, the job of a teacher is more to impart knowledge than to feed information. The information dissemination part of teaching has been taken over by technology. Therefore a teacher now needs to concentrate more on knowledge than feeding facts.
2. Thanks to emerging domains of knowledge and technology learning has become collaborative. Teachers should take note of it and learn the collaborative techniques to facilitate learning.
Another important aspect is the role a teacher plays in shaping the personality of the students. Often students, especially in the younger age, look up to their teacher for life lessons. Teachers need to appreciate that they are (or could be) role models for children. Today in India in absence of good role models, teachers need to position themselves as role models for the students to follow. This is a great responsibility. Are we, the teachers ready to take this responsibility?
Irony
There are three common types of irony: Verbal, dramatic and cosmic.
Verbal irony occurs when either the speaker means something totally different than what he/she is saying or the audience realizes, because of their knowledge of the particular situation to which the speaker is referring, that the opposite of what a character is saying is true. Dramatic irony occurs when facts are not known to the characters in a work of literature but are known by the audience. Cosmic irony is what at the end of the day happens, despite all efforts otherwise.
An example could be be seen in Shakespeare’s Othello. Iago begs his wife to steal Desdemona’s handkerchief so he can use this as conclusive proof that Cassio is having an affair with Desdemona. At the end of the play, when Othello tells Iago’s wife about the handkerchief, she confesses that Iago put her up to stealing it. Iago winds up being at Cassio’s mercy. The very handkerchief Iago thought would allow him to become lieutenant and bring Cassio to ruins was the handkerchief that brought Iago to ruins and exalted Cassio even higher than his position of lieutenant.
Now all types of irony could be seen, witnessed and experienced in India. Just look around.
Teachers Day Greetings
Happy Teachers Day, Life
You have been the greatest teacher to me

ABOUT M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women
One of the youngest colleges in the country to
be granted autonomy, M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women has displayed its
penchant for distinction and innovation in academics since its inception. The college has been committed to
attracting and supporting top calibre women students, providing them the right
arena for higher education. The college has over 14 UG & 8 PG courses plus
a dedicated Research programme in the Department of Commerce. Affiliated to the
University of Madras, it boasts a strength of 3,000 students. The college
offered itself for accreditation in its decennial year in 2004 and has been reaccredited
in 2009 by the NAAC (The National Assessment & Accreditation Council) with
an ‘A’ grade and a 3.51 CGPA on a 4 point scale.
The vision of the college is to evolve into a University of
international repute. Towards this end,
the regimen of academic study at each level is well balanced with
extra & co curricular activities, which include workshops, lectures,
seminars, conferences, symposia etc. organized by the faculty. The individual
departments of the college are responsible for the academic activities which
include teaching, research and other educational support to students. The teaching
faculty have distinguished themselves through awards for academic accolades
earned nationally and globally.
Department of Journalism. Established in 2003, the Department of Journalism seeks to equip
aspiring journalists to handle news in the print media, the electronic media
and the online media. As part of the course, students undertake projects which
involve active field experience comprising live beat coverage, research and
interviews that equip them with the skills required to join the band of
professionals in the industry.
The
department believes in keeping up with the trends in the field of journalism,
and recognises the magnitude of influence that the digital media has on its
practice. Far from being the radical,
avant garde concept it once was, practised by only the most forward-looking of
news organisations, convergence journalism has now made its presence felt in the
journalistic landscape. Most news organisations, having tentatively tried their
hands at being part of the digital world -producing a video clip here, web
updates there, and elsewhere an interactive infographic - are now regularly
doing it all, and what's more, they are deploying a lean, multi-skilled team,
rather than specialists, to do it.
But
what is the upshot of this seismic shift? On the one hand, it puts a vast array
of technological tools in the hands of journalists. At the same time, it puts a
question mark on the very notion of who is a journalist. With the Internet --
particularly social media -- democratising journalistic resources and
information, every networked citizen could potentially be a disseminator of
news content. If the supply pattern has changed, so has the consumption. News
reception is no longer collective -it is much more individualised. Besides,
thanks to mobile wireless technology, news content portability may even exceed
that of newspapers, as Denis Mc Quail says.
In
this scenario, some questions arise. With the amateurisation of news
production, whither journalistic accountability? When more and more content
ends up online for the consumption of an active minority, could the majority of
citizens be left the victims of a knowledge gap? What happens to public
opinion? Are the emerging media technologies changing the face of journalism? If
so, how? And where do the traditional news media stand in this changing
scenario?
These
and many more questions surrounding media convergence in journalism warrant
in-depth study and knowledge-sharing, so that, even as news production and
delivery models change, basic journalistic values are preserved. The department
of Journalism at M.O.P. Vaishnav College has taken a step in this direction through
a paper presentation seminar on various dimensions of new media and digital
journalism.
Implications and
Influences of New Media technologies on
